On June 27, 2026, visitors to Zoo New York at Thompson Park will have a unique opportunity to explore one of the most overlooked conservation stories on Earth. Hosted by the Wild Camel Protection Foundation USA (WCPF USA), this special educational exhibit invites the public to discover the endangered Wild Camel (Camelus ferus) and the fragile ecosystem of the Gobi Desert it calls home.

Often mistaken for its domestic relative, the Wild Camel is in fact a distinct species that has survived in some of the harshest environments on the planet for hundreds of thousands of years. Today, it stands on the brink of extinction. With only about 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild across Mongolia and China, and none in zoos worldwide, the Wild Camel is one of the rarest large mammals on Earth. Even more striking, only around 40 individuals are currently held in conservation breeding centers in Mongolia.

This exhibition aims to bridge that gap between distance and awareness. Through compelling visual storytelling, photography, and educational materials, visitors will be transported to the vast landscapes of the Gobi Desert, where survival is shaped by extreme conditions and increasing human pressures. The exhibit also highlights the critical conservation work being carried out in Mongolia, including breeding programs, scientific research, and efforts to mitigate threats such as habitat loss, climate change, and hybridization with domestic camels.

More than just an exhibit, this event is an invitation to engage. Families, students, and wildlife enthusiasts will have the chance to learn not only about the Wild Camel, but also about the broader biodiversity of the Gobi Desert and why protecting this species matters on a global scale. As an umbrella species, conserving the Wild Camel helps safeguard an entire ecosystem and the many unique species that depend on it.

WCPF USA hopes that this event will spark curiosity, inspire action, and build a stronger conservation community in the United States. By bringing this story to a public space like Zoo New York, the goal is simple yet powerful: to make the invisible visible, and to ensure that one of the world’s rarest animals is not forgotten.

Join us on June 27 for a journey into one of the most remote corners of the world, and discover why the future of the Wild Camel depends on all of us.
